In spite of this, Grace strives to do work that makes a larger contribution to society, but she figures she can put that on hold while she’s young. Over the span of a week, Grace makes a discovery at the office with one of the partners that will forever change her perception of the place she works. In addition, another partner--the wife of the man whom Grace made her shocking discovery about--gives her an offer she can’t refuse. It appears that her future in the world of law may be looking upward--but, as Grace will soon come to find out, her business and personal worlds may soon collide with one of her office superiors. How will Grace react Will it be a terse situation, or a beautiful affair ---------------------------------------------------------- EXCERPT FROM BOOK “That’s a Warhol,” said Theresa, coming up behind Grace. “Todd and I bought that when we first made partner at the firm.” “It’s beautiful. So…original,” said Grace. “I’m sorry, I just don’t know that much about Art.” “That’s fine. You obviously have a good eye,” said Theresa, and smiled. “The thing about Warhol is that he refused to conform. On the surface, he acted the way people expected him to be, but he never let it detract from his craft.” “I guess that makes sense,” Grace said. “Good for him for not letting society detract him from what he loved.” “Exactly,” said Theresa. “The weird thing is, that’s why Todd and I love Warhol so much.” “Oh, really” said Grace, fully intrigued with where this could possibly be heading. “Totally,” said Theresa. “You see, when you want to become a lawyer in New York City, there’s not only a certain mentality you have to have, but there’s a particular image you have to maintain.” “And what does that consist of” asked Grace. “Well, for starters, you have to be married. And, you’re going to want to be married to someone who challenges you. Todd—say what you will about the man. I know he’s an asshole. I know he works you and everyone else in that office way too hard. But he himself works just as hard as anyone. He loves the law.” “And so do you,” said Grace, turning to look into Theresa’s eyes. “And so do I,” she said, nodding. “But the thing is, it takes so much more than just a love of the law, or being a damn fine lawyer, to be successful. It’s as much that image as everything.” “So…tell me if I’m being presumptuous here,” said Grace, “But are you saying that you and Todd got married for image’s sake” Theresa stared silently into Grace’s eyes for several second, before turning her back on her and walking closer to the Warhol painting. “I’m saying that both Todd and I made certain arrangements before we married,” said Theresa, not turning to look at Grace. “Our marriage was—is—less about love, and more about a contractual obligation, or about meeting the image requirements for being successful here in New York City.” “Wow,” said Grace, not knowing what else to say and being genuinely floored by this news. “That’s…well, on the one hand, it’s insane, but on the other, I admire the devotion to your craft.
